3:12 Tax collectors ¹  also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?”

6:27 “But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies, ²  do good to those who hate you,

12:21 So it is with the one who stores up riches for himself, ³  but is not rich toward God.”

[3:12]  ¹ sn The tax collectors would bid to collect taxes for the Roman government and then add a surcharge, which they kept. Since tax collectors worked for Rome, they were viewed as traitors to their own people and were not well liked. Yet even they were moved by John’s call.

[6:27]  ² sn Love your enemies is the first of four short exhortations that call for an unusual response to those who are persecuting disciples. Disciples are to relate to hostility in a completely unprecedented manner.

[12:21]  ³ sn It is selfishness that is rebuked here, in the accumulation of riches for himself. Recall the emphasis on the first person pronouns throughout the parable.
